Causes of Infertility ?
Are you worried about why you're not able to become pregnant?
There can be many reasons why pregnancy does not happen.
Infertility is defined when a couple is unable to conceive despite a year of regular unprotected intercourse.
This could be due to one or more of the following reasons:
1. Anovulation: Here the ovulation/ release of egg from the ovary is not happening.
Another problem could be low egg reserve- usually seen towards the end of the reproductive spectrum of a woman.
2. Blocked/ dysfunctional fallopian tubes: the fallopian tubes have a critical role for a natural pregnancy to occur. They pick up the released egg from the ovary, allow the sperms to meet the egg, hence fertilization occurs in the tube. A blocked tube will be a hindrance to this process.
3. Endometriosis: this is a disease where the endometrial tissue(which is the normal lining of the womb), is present in the ovary and other sites in the pelvis. It can cause endometriotic ovarian cysts, cause pelvic adhesions, impede tubal function, cause painful intercourse. All these processes can affect the fertility.
4. Uterine factor: Structural problems in the uterus can affect the implantation process and even prevent pregnancy. Polyps in the cavity, submucous fibroids, adenomyosis or other pathologies can affect the receptivity of the uterus to the embryo, hence decrease the chance of pregnancy.
5. Male factor: Any defect in the semen analysis parameters i.e. sperm count, motility or abnormal morphology can be the reason for infertility. Hence, it is equally important to evaluate the male partner as well, as part of evaluation of the infertile couple.
Apart from the major causes listed above, many other factors may contribute to the fertility potential of a particular couple.
